[mixology monday] ginger mojitos
this months mixology monday, hosted by
rum dood, is centered around...ginger. all of
the entries must include the asian sensation that's sweeping the nation, zingiber officinale (i looked that up on
wikipedia).

since it's already quite hot here in austin, something "cool" and "refreshing" sounded right, and, since we're always a bit behind the cool kids, we needed something that was trendy a few years ago. that meant mojito (in our case, ginger mojitos).

to start, i sliced up some ginger into cubes and soaked it in 50/50 vodka and simple syrup for a few days. then, i muddled some mint with some hot water, and mixed it with the ginger syrup for the ginger/mint base. not sure if that was the best way to get the mint flavor into the drink, but i wanted to muddle it in some hot water to get a bit more of the mint flavor in the cup (i was worried the ginger would overpower it).
recipe:

combine equal parts ginger syrup (with the mint extract added) and lime juice in a shaker with 3 parts of rum. shake it with a fury (feels better than stirring it for two minutes), then serve in a cocktail glass with a cube of soaked ginger parked at the bottom (honestly, a piece of candied ginger would probably work better here).
